By Rabia Jabeen Bengaluru: Team Arcis of Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru, won four medals (1 gold, 3 silver) in the aero design competition conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) in April this year, in Los Angeles, California. This competition is held once a year in Van Nuys, California. Nearly, 75 teams from across the world took part in the show, of which six were from India. Team Arcis was founded in 2012 by the students of Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering with their motto “Analyse, Assemble, Aviate”. Their aim is to create authentic aircraft designs to tackle real world problems. They use electricity (not engines) to operate their aircrafts in order to reduce pollution and use remote to control the craft. Hard work and dedication had gone into the preparation for the contest. Work began 10-11 months prior, The members work for about 6-8 hours each day, even during holidays. Some first year students too took part in project and it has been an interdisciplinary team. The team worked with guidance from their seniors. Participation in the contest has been by the students’ own initiative and interest. Team Arcis was sponsored by software companies like Ansys and Solid Works. “It was very challenging as it was our first time in advance class, but we won 4 medals this year in all three classes: regular, micro and advance class. A lot of other teams also loved our model design this year and we are inspired by it”, said Shreya Giri, Member, Team Arcis “It gave me more experience and exposure than a classroom as it involves practical application. Every time an aircraft would fail, we’d have 15 minutes to fix it. One thing I learnt was to keep calm, to try and fix it, and that we have to keep trying. Failure is not uncommon, many aircrafts fail and that’s how we learn what not to do to get them in the air”, said Vishisht Adithyan, Captain, Team Arcis Team Arcis has also won NASA Engineering Award for Best Design in 2013, 2 medals in the competition by SAE in 2018 and first place in the competition held by SAE in INDIA, 2018. .
